SA-10-010 Deployed Software Currency

Issue Date:  9/15/2009

Revision Effective Date:  3/15/2010

PURPOSE

It is a common practice for organizations that manufacture, license and sell applications software as well as operating software and system software to provide continuing maintenance and support for the software.  Errors in operation and functionality issues in the software are typically addressed in revised versions published in periodic releases.   In addition, GTA has engaged the services of a third party vendor to operate the Enterprise Operating Environment.

In order to avoid expenses related to operation of non-current software assets, agencies should upgrade to current releases as quickly as possible to avoid any periodically occurring problems and incidents which are handled by new releases.  In addition, the Enterprise Operating Environment vendor‘s service pricing depends upon the currency of software deployed in the Enterprise Operating Environment.

STANDARD

An agency operating IT via the Enterprise Operational Environment shall maintain a reasonable currency of software assets which are necessary to operate in the Environment according to software currency requirements approved by GTA’s Vendor Management Organization.
